for Grades 7 - 12 by
The Commission on Secondary School

 Sophomore

Sophomores are in the “in between” year of high school. By now you’re familiar with the expectations of high school, but you have time before the crunch of junior and senior years

sets in. Use sophomore year to make the most of high school opportunities and explore

where you want to go. Do all you can now to put college in your future plans.

General suggestions for sophomore year

Academics

Keep your grades up. You’re in the swing of high school and have a lot going on, in

and out of school. Don’t forget your schoolwork. Ask for help when you need it.

Check in with teachers and counselors. Learn about requirements for college

admissions and high school graduation. Be sure you are signed up for college-prep

classes, and challenge yourself with math and foreign language courses. Make a plan

for junior-year classes.

Take a standardized test. Take the PSAT or PLAN (if offered at your school).

Learn about AP courses, the SAT and ACT tests of junior year.

Read. It’s one of the best ways to prepare for college and standardized tests.

Explore the possibilities.

Start with yourself. Having a handle on your strengths, interests, and preferences will go

a long way toward helping you make choices for the future. There is both information and

tools available on line to assist you as you begin to Map Your Future.
