for Grades 7 - 12 by
The Commission on Secondary School

 Freshman

Freshman year is the beginning of a four-year journey with new friends, more activities, and

in-depth studies. As you explore all that high school has to offer, set your sights on college

or other training.

General suggestions for freshman year

Academics

Plan to work hard.  9th grade is the first year your grades go on your “official” transcript

and get counted in your GPA (grade point average). Turn in homework, join in class discussions, and study for tests. Ask for help: Teachers want you to succeed!

Check in with your counselor. Learn about honors courses, advanced-placement

(AP) classes, and standardized tests as you look ahead. Make sure you are signed

up for college-prep courses such as foreign language and math.

Explore the possibilities!

Start with yourself. Go to nycareerzone.org tools to discover how what you like to do now translates into jobs in the future. Find out how your interests can help you make plans for

the future.

Get involved. High school isn’t just about academics. What you do outside of class is important, too. Find a few activities you’d like to try this year. Fun fact: Students with extracurricular interests often do better in school. Go for it, and find your niche!
